Meetup Safety
In danger right now? Call 911 (or your local emergency number). In emotional crisis? Call or text 988 in the US.
Gather doesn't organize, host, supervise or attend in-person meetups, and we don't run background checks or verify members' identities. If your crew decides to meet, you are responsible for your own safety. These tips help, but they can't remove every risk.
Before you meet
- Get to know people in the crew room and on a video call first.
- Look for warning signs: pressure to meet fast or alone, stories that don't add up, requests for money or personal details.
- Prefer group meetups for the first time, not one-on-one.
Where and how
- Meet in a busy public place such as a café, library or coworking space, during the day if you can. Never meet at a private home for a first meetup.
- Tell a friend where you're going, who you're meeting and when you'll be back. Share your live location if you're comfortable doing so.
- Arrange your own transport, keep your phone charged, and stay in control of your drinks and belongings.
Protect yourself
- Don't share your home address, ID documents, passwords or financial details.
- Never send money, crypto or gift cards, or invest in a member's project under pressure.
- Don't sign contracts or hand over work, code or accounts until you trust the people and have written terms.
- Leave whenever you feel uncomfortable. You don't owe anyone an explanation.
Accessibility and respect
- Choose places everyone in the crew can reach, and respect people's religious, dietary and accessibility needs.
If something goes wrong
- If you're in danger, contact the police first.
- Then report the member with the report button or by email. Our Safety page explains how we handle reports.
